Why you need a Twitter card validator
X, formerly Twitter, shut down its official Card Validator in 2022. Cards still render on X, but there is no first-party way to preview one before posting. This page fills that gap: it reads the twitter:* meta tags from any URL and shows the card X will build, using the same fallback rules X applies.
Tags that are read
twitter:cardsets the card type.summarygives a small square thumbnail beside the text.summary_large_imagegives a full-width image above it. Without this tag X falls back to a summary card if any Open Graph tags exist.twitter:titleandtwitter:descriptionfall back to og:title and og:description, then to the title tag and meta description.twitter:imagefalls back to og:image. It must be an absolute URL. The large image card wants a 2 to 1 ratio, at least 300 by 157, no larger than 4096 by 4096 and under 5 MB. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF are accepted. SVG is not.twitter:siteandtwitter:creatorattribute the card to an account. They are shown in the preview but are optional.
Common reasons a card does not appear
- The twitter:image path is relative. X will not resolve it. The checker shows the resolved absolute URL so you can set it explicitly.
- robots.txt blocks X's crawler,
Twitterbot. Tags can be perfect and the card still never renders. - The page redirects through a tracking link that strips the tags. Every redirect hop is listed above.
- X cached an earlier version. X keeps card data for about seven days. Appending a query string such as
?v=2to the shared link forces a fresh fetch.
Questions
Is there still an official Twitter Card Validator?
No. X removed the Card Validator at cards-dev.twitter.com in August 2022. Cards still work, but previewing them now needs a third-party tool like this one.
Which card type should I use?
summary_large_image for articles, products and anything with a strong image. summary for profile pages, documentation and pages whose image is a logo.
Do I need twitter tags if I already have Open Graph?
Only twitter:card. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image for everything else. Add twitter:image only when you want a different crop than the Facebook image.
How do I make X pick up changes to my card?
Change the URL X sees. Add or change a query parameter on the link you post. X treats it as a new page and fetches fresh tags.
